Shure SM91A Boundary Microphone

The Shure SM91A is a half-cardioid boundary condenser that lies flat — inside a kick drum on the pillow, under a piano lid or on a stage floor. Paired with a Beta 52A it gives you the click and the weight of a kick drum on separate channels.

Worth knowing before you book

• Inside a kick drum it needs a port hole in the front head and something soft to sit on — most drummers already have a pillow or blanket in there.
• On a grand piano it lies on the frame under the lid, picking up the whole instrument without a stand in the way.
• Boundary mics pick up everything in a half-sphere around them, so they're not a substitute for a lectern or handheld mic for speeches — see our JTS gooseneck or the Electro-Voice RE3 for that.
