Amplifier repair

PA power amplifiers, guitar and bass amps, and hi-fi integrated amplifiers. Faults are traced at component level — output stages, power supplies, protection circuits, relays and dry joints — rather than swapping whole boards.

Typical faults: no output on one channel, protect light that won't clear, hum or buzz, distortion, shutting down when warm, no power.

Speaker & PA repair

Powered speakers and subwoofers usually fail in the built-in amplifier module or power supply; passive cabinets more often need a driver, crossover or connector sorted. Both are diagnosed and quoted before any work starts.

Typical faults: popping, crackling, cutting out, dead tweeter, no power, rattles and buzzes at volume.

Mixer & mixing desk repair

Analogue and digital mixers, from small club and band desks to rack-mount processors and powered mixers.

Typical faults: crackly faders and pots, dead channels, noisy preamps, no phantom power, USB audio not recognised, desk won't boot.

Hi-fi & stereo repair

Integrated amplifiers, receivers, separates and vintage hi-fi are assessed on the same bench as the pro gear. Tell us the make and model on the form and the workshop will confirm whether it can take the job on before you bring anything in.

Typical faults: USBs not reading, slipping jog wheels, bleeding crossfaders and channel faders, dead buttons, lost USB connection, turntables not holding speed.

Hi-fi, stereo & vintage audio repairs

Vintage hi-fi & stereo amplifiers

Integrated amplifiers, receivers, pre and power amp separates from the 1970s onwards. Older units often need recapping, cleaned or replaced switches and controls, new relays and reflowed joints rather than a single failed part.

Typical faults: one channel quiet or dead, crackle when the volume or balance is turned, hum, relay not clicking in, intermittent sound, no power.

Hi-fi speakers & subwoofers

Bookshelf and floorstanding speakers, active monitors and powered subwoofers. Passive speakers usually need a driver, crossover or terminal sorting; powered ones most often have an amplifier module or power supply fault.

Typical faults: distortion at volume, rattles and buzzes, dead tweeter, subwoofer with no output, hum through the speaker.

Turntables & record players

DJ turntables are routine bench work. Hi-fi turntables and record players with an electrical fault, such as a motor, speed control, switch or built-in preamp, are assessed case by case.

Typical faults: not holding speed, won't start, hum in the phono stage, one channel missing, pitch control not responding.

CD players, tuners & other separates

CD players, tuners, radios, tape decks and other stereo components can be looked at, but whether a repair makes sense depends on the model and whether parts are still available. The form tells the workshop enough to give you a straight answer up front.

How much does an AV repair cost?
Every job is bench-tested first and you receive a written quote before any chargeable work starts. If you decide not to go ahead with the repair, an inspection fee may apply — the form asks you to acknowledge that up front so there are no surprises.
Is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?
For most professional amplifiers, powered speakers, mixers and good-quality hi-fi, a component-level repair costs a fraction of a replacement. Because you get a written quote after diagnosis and before any chargeable work, you can weigh the repair cost against buying new before you commit.
How long does a repair take?
The workshop aims to reply by email within two working days of receiving your form, to confirm the job and the logistics. Turnaround after that depends on the fault and on parts availability. If you have a show date, put it in the “date you need it back by” field and mark the request as urgent.
Do you repair hi-fi and home audio, or only professional gear?
The workshop's core is professional sound, lighting and DJ equipment, but home hi-fi — integrated amplifiers, receivers, separates, powered subwoofers, studio monitors and vintage stereo equipment — is assessed on the same bench. Send the form with the make, model and fault and we'll tell you quickly whether it's a job we can take on.
Can you fix a speaker that has blown or started crackling?
Usually, yes. On a powered speaker the fault is most often in the built-in amplifier module or power supply rather than the driver itself; on a passive speaker it's more likely a driver, crossover or connector. Describe what it's doing on the form — popping, cutting out, distorting or completely dead — and the diagnosis will pin it down.
Where can I drop my equipment off for repair?
There's no walk-in counter — drop-off is by arrangement, either at our unit near Diss on the Norfolk–Suffolk border or direct to the PCN Electronics workshop in Saxmundham. Send the form first. The address and a time slot are confirmed once the job is booked in, and unannounced deliveries can't be accepted or logged against a job.
I'm not in Norfolk or Suffolk. Can you still help?
Yes. Tracked, insured courier collection and return is available anywhere in the UK. Choose “courier collection” on the form and add your postcode; the collection is arranged once your request has been confirmed.
Who actually does the work?
MAV Hire manages the booking, drop-off and courier arrangements. The bench work is carried out by PCN Electronics Ltd, an electronics repair specialist in Saxmundham, Suffolk, working to component level. You get one point of contact and a written quote from the workshop.
Do you offer servicing contracts for venues and hire companies?
Yes. Scheduled maintenance for venues, rental houses and production companies is available, including whole-rack or whole-fleet inspections before a season, a tour or a stock audit, with priority turnaround. Mention it in the notes on the form.
Is there an AV or hi-fi repair shop near me?
If you're in Norfolk or Suffolk, probably yes. Can you repair vintage hi-fi and older stereo amplifiers?
Often, yes. Vintage integrated amplifiers, receivers and separates are mostly analogue and repairable at component level: recapping, cleaning or replacing switches and controls, new relays and reflowed joints. Whether a particular unit is worth doing depends on its condition and parts availability, so the workshop confirms from the make, model and fault before you send it in.
Do you repair turntables and record players?
DJ turntables are regular bench work, including speed problems, pitch faults and dead channels. Hi-fi turntables and record players with an electrical fault, such as a motor, speed control or built-in preamp, are assessed case by case.
Do you repair CD players, radios, tape decks or soundbars?
They can be assessed, but they're not the workshop's core work. Put the make, model and fault on the form and you'll get a straight answer on whether it's a job the workshop can take on and whether parts are still available, before you bring anything in.
