AV & event hire · Woodbridge & the Deben
Sound, lighting and staging in Woodbridge.
A riverside market town on the Deben, with a 16th-century Shire Hall, a working tide mill and a calendar full of outdoor events. Weddings, private dinners, quayside music, park events and the winter Lights On — planned and delivered from our base near Diss.
Getting there
Down the A140 and across to the Deben.
Woodbridge is about thirty-three miles south-east of our base at Roydon, near Diss. The usual route is the A140 south, then across country via Debenham and the B-roads, or down to the A14 and A12 depending on traffic. Either way it is roughly fifty minutes in normal conditions. Drive times here are approximate — the A12 and A14 around Ipswich can add time at peak hours.
That makes Woodbridge a comfortable day's work for us. We can arrive for a morning load-in, set up and test before guests arrive, and either stay to run the event or return later to collect. For weekend events where the venue allows it, we often set up on the Friday afternoon so nothing is rushed on the day.
The town has two distinct characters for access. Up the hill, Market Hill and the Shire Hall sit in a historic, pedestrian-friendly centre where loading needs to be timed around markets and residents. Down by the river, the Quayside, Tide Mill Way and Whisstocks are flatter and easier for vehicles but busy with visitors on fine days. We plan the vehicle, unloading point and route for whichever part of town you are in.
Dry hire is available too, collected from Roydon.
Venues in and around Woodbridge
A Shire Hall, a quay and open green spaces.
Woodbridge Town Council hires out a set of distinctive spaces, from a historic hall to open parkland, and the riverside adds a theatre and a waterfront. Most are flexible, which means sound, light and power usually have to be brought in.
- Shire Hall and Market SquareThe town's 16th-century Shire Hall, which recently marked its 450th anniversary. The council offers it for weddings, private dining, drinks receptions and meetings, and community groups use it regularly. A historic first-floor room suits discreet speakers on stands, a radio mic for speeches and warm uplighting.
- Tide Mill QuayThe quayside next to the Woodbridge Tide Mill, offered for music events, private dining and meetings. Riverside events need weatherproof PA, power distribution that is safe near water, and lighting that still works when the sun drops behind the far bank.
- WhisstocksAn outdoor public space within the Whisstocks riverside development, with views over the Deben, offered for music events and markets and used for the second evening of Lights On. Open waterfront spaces need speakers placed to keep sound on the audience and off the water.
- Elmhurst ParkAn enclosed park in the centre of Woodbridge with a bandstand, available for open-space events. Bandstand concerts need a small PA that lifts voices and instruments without overpowering a picnic crowd.
- Kingston FieldA central, easy-to-reach field that the council describes as suitable for any size of event, from sports days to large gatherings. A blank field needs everything brought in: a stage, PA, power and outdoor lighting for anything that runs past dusk.
- The Riverside, QuaysideWoodbridge's cinema and live-performance venue, which first opened in 1915 as the Woodbridge Electric Theatre and now seats 288, with a restaurant alongside. Visiting productions and private hires sometimes need extra radio mics or lighting.
- Seckford Hall, near WoodbridgeAn Elizabethan country house hotel just outside the town, on Suffolk's list of approved wedding venues. Panelled rooms and large receptions suit a carefully placed PA and uplighting that brings out the architecture.
We list these to help you plan, not to claim them as clients. Every venue has its own rules on load-in, noise and power — we check them with the venue directly before the day.
Local event calendar
The Woodbridge year.
Woodbridge's biggest events are tied to the river and the town centre, and many are run by the town council and local volunteers. These are the dates that drive demand for kit and crew.
| When | What's on |
|---|---|
| Spring | Meetings, dinners and community events in the Shire Hall, and the first open-air bookings for the summer. |
| Late June | The Woodbridge Regatta on the River Deben — a long-running, intergenerational river event with raft racing, riverside stalls and a public address system for the day. The 2025 regatta, the 187th, was held on Sunday 29 June. |
| Summer | Weddings at the Shire Hall and venues around the town, open-air concerts in Elmhurst Park, music events on the Quay and at Whisstocks, and large gatherings on Kingston Field. |
| Autumn | Private dinners, awards evenings and business events in the run-up to Christmas, plus Remembrance services in the town. |
| Late November | Woodbridge Lights On over two evenings — in 2025, Thursday 27 November around the Shire Hall, Church Street and the Thoroughfare, and Friday 28 November at Whisstocks Place and Tide Mill Way — with a brass band, choir, street performers, a lantern procession, art projections and a live set outside the Shire Hall. |
| December | Christmas parties, carol services and school concerts; Fridays and Saturdays go early. |
Dates shown are the usual pattern, with specific dates where they have been published; check with Woodbridge Town Council or the organisers for each year's arrangements.

Council-owned spaces
Booking a town space for your event.
Several of Woodbridge's best event spaces — the Shire Hall, Tide Mill Quay, Whisstocks, Elmhurst Park and Kingston Field — are hired through the town council rather than a private venue team. That works well, but it means the organiser is responsible for more of the planning, and the AV is part of that.
Start with the booking conditions. Ask the council what hours you can use the space, including set-up and take-down; whether amplified music is allowed and until when; what power, if any, is available on site; and whether vehicles can get onto the grass or the quay to unload. Those four answers decide most of the technical plan, and we are happy to ask them on your behalf once you have a booking.
Outdoors, plan for no mains. A park or field event usually needs a generator and proper distribution, with sound and lighting on separate circuits from catering. For small events, battery-powered speakers and radio mics remove the need for power altogether — useful for a bandstand concert or a short speech on the quay.
Think about the neighbours. The town centre and the riverside both have homes close by, and sound travels easily across open water. We aim speakers at the audience, keep levels sensible and finish on time, which keeps the council and residents happy and makes the next booking easier. If the event is a public one with a large crowd, ask us about radios for stewards as well.
Common questions
AV hire in Woodbridge, answered.
How far is Woodbridge from your base?
About thirty-three miles, roughly fifty minutes from our base at Roydon near Diss in normal traffic. That comfortably allows a morning load-in, a full set-up and test before guests arrive, and a same-day collection.
Can you supply a wedding or dinner at the Shire Hall?
Yes. Historic rooms like the Shire Hall suit discreet speakers on stands, a radio mic for speeches, a PA for dancing and warm uplighting. We check the venue's access, timings and any restrictions before the day.
Can you run sound for an event on Tide Mill Quay or at Whisstocks?
Yes. We supply weatherproof PA, outdoor lighting and RCD-protected power distribution, keep cables back from the water's edge, and point speakers at the audience to keep sound off the river and away from nearby homes.
Can you power an event on Kingston Field or in Elmhurst Park?
Yes. We supply power distribution and cabling to share a generator safely between sound, lighting and catering, plus a modular stage and outdoor lighting. For a small bandstand concert, battery-powered speakers need no mains at all.
Do you supply AV for business meetings and talks in Woodbridge?
Yes — lectern and radio microphones, projection, screens and LED walls, and portable hearing loops for public meetings. We set up, test and can stay to operate if needed.
How early should we book for the Regatta or Lights On?
As early as you can. Late June and late November are busy across the whole county, and summer Saturdays and December go first. Midweek and off-peak dates are often available at shorter notice.
