Getting there

Across Suffolk to the Stour.

Sudbury is about forty miles south-west of our base at Roydon, near Diss, close to the Essex border. There are two sensible routes: the A140 and A14 towards Stowmarket and then across country, or the A143 to Bury St Edmunds and down the A134 through Long Melford. Both take roughly an hour in normal traffic. Drive times on this page are approximate, and the last stretch is on country roads where farm traffic and village speed limits slow things down.

An hour away means we plan Sudbury jobs as full days. We arrive early, set up and test with plenty of time in hand, and either stay to run the event or come back to collect at an agreed time. For weddings at country venues where the reception runs late, we usually stay on site so the take-down happens straight after the last dance, not first thing the next morning.

Sudbury's centre is built around Market Hill, with St Peter's at its head and the streets dropping down towards the Quay and the water meadows. Market days and narrow side streets mean we agree a loading point with the venue in advance. Out of town, many venues are reached down long private drives or farm tracks, so we check vehicle access before the day.

Dry hire can also be collected from our base by arrangement.

Venues in and around Sudbury

Barns, a country house and an arts centre.

The Sudbury area combines a lively town centre with some of Suffolk's best-known country venues. Many are historic or rural, so power, access and noise need planning.

  • St Peter's, Market HillA Grade I listed medieval church at the top of Market Hill, declared redundant in 1972 and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is now an arts and community venue and home to Sudbury Arts Centre. Tall, hard-surfaced spaces like this need several small speakers spread through the room at a gentle level rather than one loud pair.
  • The Quay TheatreThe town's community theatre by the river, at the foot of the town near the water meadows. Visiting productions and private hires may need extra radio mics, stage lighting or effects.
  • Sudbury Town Hall and Market HillThe heart of the town and the setting for the Christmas fair and light switch-on, with children's crafts in the Town Hall. Market Hill events need weatherproof PA, power distribution for stalls and a stage that works on a sloping street.
  • Alpheton Hall Barns, near SudburyA barn venue a few miles north of the town on Suffolk's list of approved wedding venues, with capacity for around 250. Big timber barns look stunning with uplighting on the beams, and sound best with a PA set up for the room rather than a loud pair at one end.
  • The Mill Hotel, Walnut Tree LaneA converted watermill on the Stour in the town centre, listed for wedding receptions and events. Riverside function rooms suit a compact PA, a radio mic for speeches and a DJ or band setup for the evening.
  • Kentwell Hall, Long MelfordA moated Tudor house in Long Melford, about three miles from Sudbury, known for its historic re-creation events and offering weddings and exclusive use. Large historic estates usually mean a mix of indoor rooms and a marquee, with power and cable runs planned between them.

We list these to help you plan, not to claim them as clients. Every venue has its own rules on load-in, noise and power — we check them with the venue directly before the day.

Barn weddings

Getting a big barn to sound right.

The Stour Valley is barn-wedding country, and big timber barns are some of the most beautiful rooms in Suffolk. They are also some of the trickiest to make sound good, because a tall, hard, empty space reflects sound everywhere.

The first rule is to use more speakers, set lower. A single pair of loud speakers at the band end fills the roof with echo and makes speeches hard to follow at the back. A main pair for the dance floor plus a smaller pair or two further down the room, at a gentle level, keeps speeches clear for every table without anyone being blasted. For the ceremony, a radio mic on the celebrant and one for readers, into a small, discreet system, is usually all you need.

Second, think about the timeline. Speeches, first dance and evening party all want different sound, and many barns have a separate courtyard or marquee for drinks. We set the system up so it can switch quickly between modes, and add battery speakers outside if you want music or a mic for the drinks reception.

Third, light the building, not just the dance floor. Warm uplighting on the posts and beams turns a barn from dark to magical as the evening goes on, and festoon across a courtyard keeps paths safe. Check the venue's rules on noise limits, finishing times and fixing to beams early — many rural barns have sound limiters or licence conditions, and we will design the system to work within them.

Common questions

AV hire in Sudbury, answered.

How far is Sudbury from your base?

About forty miles, roughly an hour from our base at Roydon near Diss in normal traffic. We plan Sudbury events as full days, with time to set up and test before guests arrive, and we can stay on site to run the event.

Do you supply AV for barn weddings near Sudbury?

Yes. For a large barn we use a main PA for dancing plus smaller speakers down the room so speeches are clear for every table, radio mics for the ceremony and speeches, and warm uplighting on the beams.

Can you work within a venue's sound limiter or noise conditions?

Yes. Many rural venues have sound limiters or licence conditions. We ask for the details in advance and set up the system to sound good within them, rather than fighting the limiter all night.

Can you supply a town event on Market Hill?

Yes — weatherproof PA for performers and announcements, microphones, a stage if needed, lighting for a dark winter evening and power distribution for stalls. Get in touch early for late-November dates.

Can you help with an event at St Peter's or the Quay Theatre?

Yes. We can supply PA, radio and lectern mics, stage lighting and hearing loops to work alongside a venue's own equipment, and we check access and power with the venue first.

How early should we book for a summer wedding?

For Saturday weddings between May and September, book as early as you can — many couples confirm AV six to twelve months ahead. Midweek and off-peak dates are often available at shorter notice.
