AV & event hire · Southwold & the Blyth estuary

Sound and lighting for Southwold.

Beach huts, a lighthouse in the middle of the streets, the Adnams brewery and a pier — and a few miles inland, the Latitude festival at Henham Park, where we have supplied PA ourselves. We bring sound, lighting, staging and power to weddings, parties, concerts and community events in Southwold, Reydon and Walberswick.

Getting there

A town with one road in.

Southwold is about 33 miles from our base at Roydon, near Diss. We head east on the A143 past Harleston to Bungay, down the A144 through Halesworth, and join the A12 briefly before turning onto the A1095 for the final run into town. Allow approximately 55 minutes in a loaded van — an approximate figure that grows on a sunny August Saturday, when half of East Anglia is heading for the same beach.

That last stretch matters more than it looks. Southwold is almost an island: the sea on one side, the River Blyth and its marshes on another and Buss Creek on the third, with the A1095 through Reydon as the only road in. When that road is busy, everything is busy. The High Street and the streets around the Market Place are narrow, parking is tight and much of it is restricted, and in summer the town fills early. So we book load-ins for the morning, before visitors arrive, and agree with the venue exactly where the van stops and for how long.

Being under an hour away means a same-night de-rig is realistic after a wedding or a concert, and a site visit beforehand is easy to arrange. Delivery is priced by distance and shown as its own line in your quote, and dry hire collected from Roydon is available if you would rather run the kit yourself.

Venues in and around Southwold

From the Market Place to Henham Park.

Southwold's event spaces are small, characterful and often historic, with big open sites just outside the town. These are real places people ask us about, and what each tends to need.

  • The Swan, Market PlaceAdnams' hotel at the heart of the town, used for celebrations, dinners and wedding stays. Hotel rooms in historic buildings suit a compact speech system, discreet speakers and warm uplighting, set up with freestanding stands and tidy cable runs.
  • Southwold Arts Centre (the former St Edmund's Hall)Home to Suffolk Summer Theatres' season of plays from July to September and a venue for the Southwold Arts Festival. For a talk, a concert or a private event here, the job is usually clear speech, playback and simple stage lighting that a volunteer can run.
  • St Edmund's ChurchA Grade I listed church built in the fifteenth century and regarded as one of the finest in Suffolk, used for concerts and arts festival events. Its height and stone make speech difficult, so we use several small speakers close to the audience, close microphones and a hearing loop where needed.
  • Henham ParkThe estate between Southwold and Halesworth that hosts the Latitude festival. In 2026 we supplied and installed the PA for a 10m × 10m brand space there for an experiential agency — even background coverage that ran from the Friday gates to the Sunday close without intervention. Read the Latitude case study.
  • South Green and Gun HillThe open greens near the seafront — South Green hosts the charter fair, and Gun Hill carries the town's six historic cannon above the beach. Outdoor events on greens like these need weather-protected speakers, battery or generator power and an announcer's mic that cuts through wind.
  • The seafront and the pierThe promenade, the beach huts and the 190-metre pier draw crowds for Lifeboat Day and summer events. Seafront sound has nothing to reflect off and the wind carries it, so we aim speakers at the audience and keep levels sensible for the houses behind.

Apart from Henham Park, where we supplied PA for the brand space described above, we name these places to help you plan, not to claim them as our clients. We check every venue's rules on access, noise and power directly before the day.

Local event calendar

When Southwold is busiest.

Southwold's year builds from an arts festival in spring to Latitude and Lifeboat Day in high summer, then a Christmas lights evening in late November. Around these dates, roads, parking and accommodation all tighten.

When What's on
Early May bank holiday Southwold Arts Festival — live music and stalls on the High Street and Market Square, with events at the Arts Centre and St Edmund's Church (1–3 May in 2026).
Whitsun half-term Southwold's charter fair, the successor to the old Trinity Fair, on South Green, with the town charter read in the Market Place.
July – September Suffolk Summer Theatres' season of plays at the Arts Centre.
Late July Latitude Festival at Henham Park, a few miles inland — 23–26 July in 2026, its twentieth anniversary year. Expect heavy traffic on the A12 and A1095 all week.
August Southwold RNLI Lifeboat Day, with a lifeboat demonstration off the seafront and live commentary over a PA.
Late November The Christmas lights switch-on, with a market along the High Street, entertainment in the Market Place and the switch-on from the Town Hall balcony.

Dates are those published for 2026 where available; check with the organisers before planning around them.

Southwold advice

Salt air, wind and sound over water.

Coastal events look effortless in photographs. Behind them is kit that copes with salt and wind, and a sound plan that respects the neighbours.

Protect the kit, protect the people

Salt spray and sea mist get into connectors and electronics, so on exposed sites we use IP-rated lighting, cover the control position and keep cable joints off the ground. Wind is the bigger risk: banners, backdrops, screens and gazebos all act as sails. We weight and tie down anything with a surface area, and we agree a wind limit in advance at which a screen or banner comes down — and stick to it.

Battery-powered PA is ideal for a ceremony on a green or a beach-side gathering: no cable to trip over and no generator noise competing with the sea.

Sound carries further than you think

Over open water and flat marsh, low frequencies travel a long way, and Southwold's houses sit close to its greens and seafront. We aim speakers down into the audience rather than out across the town, use more small speakers at lower volume rather than two big ones, and keep bass under control after dark.

If your event has a licence with a noise condition or a finish time, send it to us. We design the system to sound full underneath it, and an engineer on site keeps it there.

Common questions

AV hire in Southwold, answered.

How long does it take you to reach Southwold?

We are about 33 miles away at Roydon, near Diss, and it takes approximately 55 minutes by van via Bungay, Halesworth and the A1095. That is an approximate figure and it grows on busy summer weekends, so we book morning load-ins and allow for traffic. Delivery is shown as its own line in your quote.

Have you worked at Latitude or Henham Park?

Yes. At Latitude 2026 we supplied, installed and tested the PA for a 10m × 10m brand space for an experiential agency, working within the festival's accreditation, inductions and build window. The system ran from the Friday gates to the Sunday close without intervention. The case study has the details.

Can you supply sound for an event on the seafront or one of the greens?

Yes. We supply weather-protected speakers, an announcer's or presenter's microphone, and battery power, or we can coordinate a generator for you where there is no supply. Permission for a public space comes from whoever manages it, and we send our insurance and risk assessment to them on request.

Will the sea air and wind affect the equipment?

We plan for both. Exposed sites get IP-rated lighting and covered control positions, cables are kept off wet ground, and anything with a surface area — a banner, screen or backdrop — is weighted, tied down and taken down at an agreed wind limit.

Can you amplify a concert or talk in St Edmund's Church?

Yes. In a tall stone church the answer is several small speakers close to the audience, microphones close to the performer and careful equalisation rather than volume. Everything is freestanding, and we can add a hearing loop for anyone who uses hearing aids.

When should we book around Latitude week or August?

As early as possible. Latitude in late July and the August holiday weeks are the busiest time on this coast for roads, accommodation and crews, and they overlap with peak wedding season. For a summer Saturday, four to six months is sensible; out of season, a few weeks' notice is often enough.
