Getting there

A planned trip, not a quick hop.

King's Lynn is about fifty miles from our base at Roydon, near Diss. The usual run is west along the A1066 to Thetford, then north on the A134 through the forest and across the Fens edge — around an hour and ten minutes in a loaded van on a clear day, longer on a summer Saturday when the coast traffic is moving. We build that into every West Norfolk job rather than pretending it is down the road.

In practice that means three things. First, we confirm load-in times and parking with the venue in writing before the day, because a wasted hour at the other end of a seventy-minute drive is the kind of thing that pushes a build late. Second, we pack spares for anything that matters — a second radio mic receiver, spare lamps and cables, a backup playback source — so a fault is fixed on site rather than by a trip home. Third, for late finishes we will tell you plainly whether a same-night de-rig makes sense or whether a morning collection is better for you and the venue. Delivery is priced by distance and shown in the quote, not hidden in the kit.

If you would rather collect, dry hire from Roydon is straightforward. Most King's Lynn customers who dry hire are already passing Thetford or the A11, and everything goes out tested, cased and labelled with the cables it needs.

Venues in and around King's Lynn

From the Tuesday Market Place to the Sandringham side.

West Norfolk venues vary hugely — a Victorian concert hall, a coaching inn on a market square, country-house hotels and open estate land. Here are the real ones customers ask us about, and what each kind of space tends to need.

  • King's Lynn Corn Exchange, Tuesday Market PlaceThe town's main auditorium, behind a Grade II listed Victorian stone frontage, rebuilt and reopened in 1996. It is a professionally equipped theatre with its own in-house systems, so for touring shows the venue's kit does the work. Where we come in is the extra: presenters' radio mics, playback, a lectern, uplighting for a dinner or awards format, or a screen for a company conference that has its own content to run.
  • The Dukes Head Hotel, Tuesday Market PlaceA classic market-square hotel with function and meeting rooms for receptions, dinners and business events of up to around 180. Hotel function rooms like this usually have house power and a basic sound system; for a wedding band, a speech-heavy dinner or a presentation that has to be heard at the back, a properly placed PA and wireless microphones make the difference.
  • Knights Hill Hotel & Spa, South WoottonA converted farmhouse and barn complex on one of West Norfolk's higher points, licensed for civil ceremonies of around 90 and evening receptions of around 200. Barn rooms with exposed timber look beautiful with warm uplighting, and they reward a sound system set up to stay clear rather than loud.
  • Congham Hall, GrimstonA Georgian country-house hotel a few miles east of the town that hosts weddings, private dining and small corporate events. Country-house rooms are often listed buildings with rules about fixings and cable routes, so we plan freestanding lighting and tidy, taped runs from the start.
  • Sandringham EstateHome each summer to the RHS Sandringham Flower Show, and a reminder of how much of West Norfolk's event calendar happens on open land. Outdoor estate sites need power distribution, IP-rated lighting and cable runs measured in tens of metres — which we supply as part of the system, not as an afterthought.
  • Town-centre spaces: King Staithe Square and the waterfrontUsed for the free summer Festival Too concerts and the Hanse Festival. For smaller community events in these squares, a compact PA with a battery or generator option and a stage-front rig of wash lighting is usually all that is needed.

We name these to help you plan, not to claim them as our own clients. Every venue has its own rules on load-in, noise and power — we ask the venue directly before the day.

Local event calendar

When King's Lynn is busiest.

King's Lynn markets itself as a festival town, and with good reason. If your event lands near one of these, book early — accommodation, crews and road space all tighten up.

When What's on
Mid-February King's Lynn Mart — one of the oldest travelling fairs in England, opening on the Tuesday Market Place around Valentine's Day. The fair fills the square, so check vehicle access with any venue on it before booking a load-in.
May The Hanse Festival celebrates the town's Hanseatic trading past across the historic centre.
June The Hanseatic Ski Race on the Great Ouse, watched from the waterfront.
Late June – July Festival Too — free outdoor concerts over several weekends in King Staithe Square and on the Tuesday Market Place.
Mid-July King's Lynn Festival of Music and the Arts, with concerts in the town's medieval churches and other venues.
Late July RHS Sandringham Flower Show on the Sandringham Estate.
October Fear in the Fens, the town's horror and dark-arts weekend, plus the newer West Norfolk WyrdFest running into November.
Late Nov – December Christmas parties, office dinners and school concerts — the busiest weeks of the year for function rooms and for us.

Months shown are the usual pattern; check the organisers for exact dates each year.

Which services suit

Matching the kit to a West Norfolk event.

Weddings

Barns, hotels and marquees

Ceremony microphones so guests at the back hear the vows, a sound system for speeches and the first dance, and warm uplighting for timber barns. For estate and garden weddings see marquee AV and festoon lighting; the full picture is on our weddings page.

Business

Conferences and launches

The port, agriculture, food processing and the borough's own business events all generate conference work. Lectern and radio mics, a screen or LED wall sized to the room, confidence monitors for presenters and an operator who stays for the day. See conference AV hire and awards and gala dinners.

Outdoor

Fêtes, festivals and estate events

Weather-protected speakers, a modular stage with steps and handrails, outdoor lighting and the power distribution to run it all. Larger shows are covered on our festival production page.

How we work at a distance

Planned in advance, so the day is calm.

Before the day

We ask for the venue's load-in window, the power available and any noise or curfew limits, and we send our certificates and risk assessment to the venue directly. For bigger jobs we will look at floor plans and photos — or visit, if the scale justifies it — so the build plan is written before the van leaves Roydon.

You get a single itemised quote with delivery shown separately, and a reply within one working day.

On the day

We arrive with time in hand, build, test every microphone and source, and walk whoever is running the event through the controls. Crewed events have an engineer on site from the first speech to the last song. Dry-hire and delivered-only jobs come with a phone number that is answered while your event is running.

De-rig happens when it suits you and the venue — late at night or first thing next morning.

Common questions

AV hire in King's Lynn, answered.

Do you really cover King's Lynn from Diss?

Yes. It is about fifty miles and roughly an hour and ten minutes by van via Thetford and the A134. We plan West Norfolk jobs around that drive — confirmed load-in times, spares on the van and a clear plan for de-rig — and the delivery cost is shown separately in your quote.

Can you add to the Corn Exchange's own equipment?

Usually, yes. The Corn Exchange is a fully equipped theatre, so for most shows its in-house systems are the starting point. We supply what an event brings on top — extra radio microphones, a lectern, playback, a screen for a conference, or uplighting for a dinner — and we liaise with the venue's technical team before the day.

What do we need for a wedding at a barn or country house near King's Lynn?

For most weddings: two or three wireless microphones for the ceremony and speeches, a compact PA sized to the guest numbers, and warm uplighting around the room. Listed buildings often restrict fixings, so we use freestanding stands and tidy taped cable runs. If you have a band or DJ, we check what they bring so you are not paying for kit twice.

Can you power an outdoor event on open land in West Norfolk?

Yes. We supply 16A, 32A and 63A power distribution with the cable runs to reach the stage and catering, IP-rated lighting for exposed positions, and we can coordinate a generator as part of the build. For a small ceremony or pop-up event, battery-powered PA needs no mains at all.

Is it worth booking early around Festival Too or the King's Lynn Festival?

Yes. Late June and July are the town's busiest weeks, and they overlap with peak wedding season. For a Saturday in that window, four to six months' notice is sensible. Midweek dates are often available much later — it is always worth asking.

Can we collect equipment ourselves instead?

Yes. Dry hire is collected from our base at Roydon, near Diss. Everything is tested before it goes out, packed in cases with the cables it needs, and comes with a simple setup guide. We are on the phone if anything puzzles you once you are back in King's Lynn.
