AV & event hire · Felixstowe & the coast
Sound, lighting and staging in Felixstowe.
An Edwardian seaside resort and the UK's busiest container port, side by side. Seafront events, the summer carnival, the book festival, hotel weddings and company functions — delivered, set up and run by a crew who know the coast.
Getting there
The A140, the A14 and the sea.
Felixstowe is about forty-two miles from our base at Roydon, near Diss. The route is the A140 south to the A14, then east past Ipswich and over the Orwell Bridge to the coast. In normal traffic that is roughly an hour. Drive times on this page are approximate — the A14 is the main road for port freight, so we allow extra time for queues around Ipswich and the Orwell Bridge, especially in high winds when it can be closed.
We treat Felixstowe as a full-day job. That means an early start, plenty of time to set up and test before the doors open, and a planned return or a crew who stays through to the end. For multi-day events — a festival weekend, a conference over two days — we can leave the system rigged overnight where the venue is secure.
Getting around the town is mostly straightforward. Hamilton Road is the main shopping street and the Triangle is its focal point; the Undercliff Road and the promenade run along the seafront below the cliff gardens. Seafront access for vehicles is restricted in places, so for promenade events we agree a loading point and time with the organiser before the day.
Dry hire is available too, collected from our base.
Venues in and around Felixstowe
A seafront theatre, hotels and a fort.
Felixstowe has a big theatre, Victorian and Edwardian hotels, and a long seafront that becomes the venue for its summer events. Coastal sites have their own demands — wind, salt air and long distances between power points.
- The Spa Pavilion Theatre, Undercliff RoadThe seafront theatre, built in 1938 on the site of the earlier Floral Hall, with around 900 seats. It closed in 2013 and reopened as a theatre in 2015 under new ownership. A theatre of that size has its own house systems; visiting shows, conferences and award nights sometimes need extra radio mics, LED screens or lighting.
- Harvest HouseA landmark building described by the town council as an iconic venue, and the main home of the Felixstowe Book Festival. Author talks and panel events are mostly about speech: good radio and lectern mics, a clear PA and a hearing loop do more than any amount of lighting.
- The Orwell Hotel, Hamilton RoadA large hotel near the station and the town centre that offers meeting and event space, and the starting point of the children's candlelight parade for the Christmas switch-on. Hotel function rooms suit conference AV by day and a PA and uplighting by night.
- Hotel Coco (formerly the Brook Hotel), Orwell RoadA town-centre hotel listed as a wedding venue for up to about 140 guests, licensed for civil ceremonies, with a garden and sun terrace. A mid-size reception like this suits a compact PA, a radio mic for speeches and a DJ or band setup for the evening.
- The Triangle, Hamilton RoadThe town-centre focal point where the Christmas switch-on stage has been set up, with stalls along Hamilton Road. Street stages need weatherproof speakers, a steady supply and cables kept clear of shoppers.
- Landguard Fort and the peninsulaThe historic fort at the southern tip of the town, an English Heritage site overlooking the harbour mouth. Heritage and outdoor sites on the peninsula need freestanding, weatherproof equipment and power brought in.
We list these to help you plan, not to claim them as clients. Every venue has its own rules on load-in, noise and power — we check them with the venue directly before the day.
Local event calendar
The Felixstowe year.
Felixstowe's events cluster around the seafront in summer and Hamilton Road in winter. These are the dates and periods that keep the coast busy.
| When | What's on |
|---|---|
| Spring | Business events, dinners and conferences in the town's hotels, and the start of the seafront season. |
| Late June | The Felixstowe Book Festival, with talks and events centred on Harvest House and pre-festival extras such as a river cruise and a supper by the sea. In 2026 it ran from 26 to 28 June. |
| July | Felixstowe Carnival weekend, run by the town's long-standing Carnival Association. In 2026 it ran from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July, with a Battle of the Bands theme. |
| August | Summer weekend events on the seafront — in 2025 the town launched a series of summer weekends with headline music acts — plus historic vehicle displays on the prom, charity runs and live music. |
| Autumn | Halloween events, fireworks and the run of Christmas party bookings in the hotels and clubs. |
| Late November / early December | The Christmas lights switch-on and craft market at the Triangle on Hamilton Road, with stalls, a grotto, carol singing, live entertainment and a children's candlelight parade from the Orwell Hotel. |

Seafront events
Sound and light by the sea.
A seafront event is one of the hardest places to get sound and lighting right, and Felixstowe's long, open promenade is a classic example. Three things make the difference: wind, distance and the weather turning.
Wind affects everything. It pushes sound sideways, so an audience a little way off-axis can lose the top end entirely, and it puts real force on anything tall. We use weighted or strapped speaker stands, keep banners and drapes off the stage edges, and choose speaker positions that fire along the crowd rather than across the wind. If a forecast looks marginal, we agree a wind limit for tall items before the day.
Distance is the second problem. Promenade audiences spread out in a long line rather than a block. Rather than one big pair of speakers turned up loud at the stage, we use several smaller speakers spaced along the crowd, so people at the far end hear clearly without those at the front being deafened. Power has to travel too, so long cable runs go through proper distribution with protection at every point the public can reach.
Then the weather. Salt air and spray are hard on equipment, so outdoor fixtures are IP-rated, connections are covered and nothing sits on wet ground. We bring covers for the stage and front-of-house position, and plan how to protect the system quickly if a shower comes in off the sea. Tell us early whether you have a wet-weather plan, and we will build the technical plan around it.
Common questions
AV hire in Felixstowe, answered.
How far is Felixstowe from your base?
About forty-two miles, roughly an hour from our base at Roydon near Diss via the A140 and A14 in normal traffic. We allow extra time for the A14 around Ipswich and plan Felixstowe events as full-day jobs.
Can you supply sound and a stage for a seafront event?
Yes. We supply weatherproof PA, a modular stage with steps and handrails, outdoor lighting and power distribution, and we plan speaker positions and stand weighting around wind and a long, spread-out audience.
Can you add to a theatre's own equipment for a show or awards night?
Yes. We can supply extra radio mics, LED screens, lighting and staging to work alongside a venue's house system, and we liaise with the venue's technical team so nothing is doubled up.
Do you supply AV for conferences and company events?
Yes — lectern and radio microphones, projection and LED screens, confidence monitors, and full production for award nights and gala dinners, with a technician on site to run it if needed.
Can you supply wedding AV at a Felixstowe hotel?
Yes. For a hotel reception we usually suggest a compact PA, a radio mic for speeches, uplighting and either a DJ setup or a band PA. We check the venue's access, timings and any sound limits first.
How early should we book for carnival weekend or the summer?
For July and August weekends and for December, book as early as you can — three to six months ahead is sensible. Midweek and off-peak dates are often available at shorter notice.
