Getting there
Our closest Suffolk town.
Eye is about six miles from our base at Roydon, near Diss — south across the Waveney via the A140 and Brome. It is around fifteen minutes in the van in normal traffic. As with all our drive times, that is approximate.
Being this close changes the way we can work. Site visits are easy to arrange, often at short notice. We can deliver the day before, come back to set up on the day, pop in for a sound check before a concert and collect late in the evening, all without a long drive in between. If a microphone or cable needs swapping mid-event, a replacement is only a quarter of an hour away.
Eye's town centre is compact, with Broad Street, Castle Street, Church Street and Lambseth Street forming the old core around the church and castle. Parking and unloading are generally manageable outside market and event days, but some streets are narrow, so we check access with the venue before we arrive.
Many Eye organisers also choose dry hire — collecting from our base at Roydon, a short drive away, and returning the kit the next day.
Venues in and around Eye
A town hall, a great church and country houses.
Eye is small, but there is a good range of venues in and around it — historic buildings in the town, and hotels and estates in the villages nearby. Most need a light, well-planned setup rather than a big system.
- Eye Town Hall, Broad StreetA Grade II* listed town hall completed in 1857, now the meeting place of Eye Town Council. It hosts community events such as the Christmas bazaar and a pop-up heritage museum during Heritage Open Days. A hall like this suits a small speaker pair, a radio mic and a portable hearing loop for talks and meetings.
- The Church of St Peter and St PaulEye's large medieval parish church, famous for its tall, flint-panelled tower. Big churches carry choirs and organ beautifully but swallow speech, so discreet column speakers along the nave and radio mics for readers do far more than one loud speaker at the front.
- The Oaksmere, BromeA country house hotel in Brome, just north of Eye, on Suffolk's list of approved wedding venues. Country-house receptions often use a marquee or an outdoor space alongside the house, so a PA that can serve both, plus uplighting and festoon, works well.
- Thornham Hall, Thornham MagnaA country house wedding and events venue a couple of miles south-west of Eye on the Thornham estate, with standing capacity of around 120. The estate is also home to Thornham Walks, a popular network of woodland and parkland paths.
- Eye Castle and the town centreThe castle mound in the middle of town, with views across Eye, and the streets around it that host the Open Gardens weekend and the Christmas street fair. Outdoor town events need weatherproof PA, power for stalls and sensible cable routes through narrow streets.
- Hartismere SchoolThe town's secondary school, with productions, concerts and prizegivings through the year. School halls are acoustically unforgiving, so float mics along the stage front and radio mics for lead roles make a bigger difference than more volume.
We list these to help you plan, not to claim them as clients. Every venue has its own rules on load-in, noise and power — we check them with the venue directly before the day.

The Eye year.
Eye's calendar is community-run and closely tied to Diss and the villages around it. These are the periods that shape demand for sound, lighting and staging.

|---|---|
| Spring | Quiz nights, club dinners and fundraising events in the town and nearby village halls, and the start of wedding season at the country houses. |
| June | Eye Open Gardens, when more than twenty gardens around Castle Street, Church Street and Lambseth Street open their gates, with plant sales, stalls and refreshments. |
| Summer | Weddings at the Oaksmere, Thornham Hall and marquee venues around the town, school productions and leavers' events, village fêtes and garden parties. |
| September | Heritage Open Days, when Eye Town Hall has hosted a pop-up heritage museum. |
| Autumn | Concerts and choral events in the church, harvest suppers and community dinners. |
| Early December | The Christmas lights switch-on with late-night shopping, a street fair and stalls on the main street, carols around the tree and a Christmas bazaar in the Town Hall. |
Months shown are the usual pattern; check with Eye Town Council and the organisers for each year's dates.

Community events
Keeping it simple for volunteers.
A lot of what happens in Eye is organised by volunteers — the Open Gardens committee, church and school groups, the town council, sports clubs and village hall teams. They usually want something that works reliably, fits a modest budget and can be run by whoever is on duty, not a sound engineer.
Our approach is to supply the smallest system that will do the job well, and to set it up so it is hard to get wrong. That might be a pair of speakers on stands, a mixer with only the channels you need labelled and the rest switched off, two radio mics with fresh batteries and spares in a bag, and a short written guide taped to the case. We test it all in the room, show someone how it works, and leave a phone number for the evening.
For outdoor town events, the same thinking applies. Battery-powered speakers and radio mics need no mains, which removes cables from busy streets and gardens. When you do need power for stalls, lights or a stage, we supply proper distribution so it is safe and the right circuits feed the right things.
Because we are so close, we can also be more flexible: a quick visit to look at the hall, a dry run the evening before, or a call-out if anything is not right on the night. If you are planning something in Eye and are not sure what you need, send us the details and we will suggest a setup — including when that means less kit than you expected.
Common questions
AV hire in Eye, answered.
How close are you to Eye?
About six miles — roughly fifteen minutes from our base at Roydon near Diss. That makes site visits, day-before delivery, sound checks and late collections easy to arrange.
Do you supply weddings at the Oaksmere or Thornham Hall?
We supply wedding AV at country-house and marquee venues around Eye, including ceremony and speech mics, PA for dancing, uplighting and festoon. We check each venue's rules on access, power and noise directly before the day.
Can you help with a concert or service at the church in Eye?
Yes. Large medieval churches need several discreet speakers along the nave at a gentle level, radio mics for readers and often a portable hearing loop, so speech is clear without the equipment dominating the building.
Can volunteers run the equipment themselves?
Yes. We supply simple, well-labelled systems with a short written guide, test everything in the room and show whoever is on duty how it works. We also leave a contact number for the evening.
Can you supply the Christmas lights evening or Open Gardens?
Yes — weatherproof or battery-powered PA, microphones for choirs and announcements, lighting for a dark December evening and power distribution for stalls if needed.
Can we collect the equipment ourselves?
Yes. Dry hire is collected from our base at Roydon near Diss, a short drive from Eye. Everything is tested, cased with the right cables and comes with a simple setup guide.
