AV & event hire · Dereham & mid Norfolk
Sound, lighting and staging in Dereham.
The market town at the middle of Norfolk — a busy memorial hall, a heritage railway, a working museum farm next door and some of the county's best garden and barn wedding venues within a few miles. We deliver, set up and collect across Dereham and the villages around it, or dry hire if you'd rather run it yourself.
Getting there
Mid Norfolk, cross-country.
Dereham sits right in the middle of the county, about thirty miles north-west of our base at Roydon near Diss. There is no single main road between the two, so the run is cross-country through Attleborough — usually around fifty minutes in the van, a little more on market days. It is comfortably inside our regular delivery area, which means a site visit before a wedding or a bigger build is a realistic option rather than a favour.
Being central has another advantage for Dereham customers: the town is the natural meeting point for events that draw from Norwich, Swaffham, Fakenham and Watton at once. Plenty of mid Norfolk events are really county events held in a convenient place — club dinners, charity balls, society AGMs — and that kind of event needs a system that copes with a big room and a long list of speakers, not just a background-music speaker on a stand.
Delivery is priced by distance and shown separately in the quote. If you prefer to collect, dry hire from Roydon is a straightforward run via Attleborough.
Venues in and around Dereham
Halls, heritage sites and garden venues.
Dereham's venues split neatly into three types — the town's own halls and churches, heritage attractions that open for events, and the barn and garden wedding venues in the surrounding villages. Each needs something slightly different.
- Dereham Memorial Hall, Norwich StreetThe town's main community venue and a long-standing home for dances, concerts, fairs and public meetings. Community halls like this are generous spaces with hard surfaces, which means sound bounces. The fix is a system aimed at the audience rather than the walls, plus enough microphones that nobody has to shout — not simply more volume.
- St Nicholas' Church, Church StreetThe town's large parish church, which hosts concerts and a Christmas Tree Festival each winter. Big churches swallow spoken word; a few discreet column speakers down the nave and a radio mic for readers do far more than one loud box at the front. For hard-of-hearing visitors, we also supply portable hearing loops.
- Gressenhall Farm and WorkhouseA few miles north of the town, Norfolk Museums' farm and workhouse site is licensed for weddings and civil partnerships and hires out function rooms and outdoor space, including marquees, for meetings, conferences and outdoor events. Heritage sites often have firm rules on cable routes and fixings, so we plan the layout with the venue in advance.
- Swanton Morley House & GardensA garden wedding venue about three miles from Dereham. Garden and outdoor-ceremony venues need sound that carries over open air without echoing back off anything — battery-powered speakers for the ceremony, and a proper PA and lighting rig for the evening.
- Godwick Great Barn, TittleshallA historic barn wedding venue around seven miles north-west of the town. Tall timber barns look extraordinary with warm uplighting picking out the roof structure, and they need sound tuned so speeches stay clear in a reverberant room.
- Mid-Norfolk Railway, Dereham stationThe heritage line runs from Dereham to Wymondham and hosts special and seasonal trains. Station and platform events need compact, robust kit and power planned around a working railway.
We list these to help you plan, not to claim them as clients. Every venue has its own load-in, noise and power rules — we check with them directly before the day.

Which services suit
Getting the right kit for a mid Norfolk event.
Garden ceremonies and barn receptions
Wireless microphones and battery speakers for an outdoor ceremony, then a PA, uplighting and festoon for the evening. Marquee receptions are covered on our marquee AV page, and the full wedding picture is on weddings & events.
Halls, churches and schools
Dances, panto, concerts and AGMs. We set up a system that the volunteers on the night can actually operate, with a clear handover. Productions get float mics across the stage front and radio mics for leads. See school, church & community AV.
Fêtes, shows and festivals
Weatherproof speakers for announcements and live music, a modular stage with steps and handrails, outdoor lighting and power distribution. Bigger events: festival production.
A note on halls
Why community halls sound worse than they should.
Most of the complaints we hear about sound at community events — "nobody could hear the speeches", "the band was deafening at the front and muddy at the back" — come from the room rather than the equipment. Halls in market towns like Dereham were built for dances and meetings, with hard floors, plaster walls and high ceilings. Every surface reflects sound back into the room.
The answer is placement and coverage. We raise speakers on stands so they fire over the heads of the front rows, angle them away from bare walls, and for longer rooms add a delay speaker halfway down so the people at the back are not relying on the front pair. For speeches, we put the microphone close to the speaker's mouth — a lectern mic or a headset for anyone nervous — so the system can stay at a comfortable level. It costs very little more than putting two speakers at the front, and the difference is obvious to everyone in the room.
Common questions
AV hire in Dereham, answered.
How far is Dereham from you, and do you charge for delivery?
Dereham is about thirty miles from our base near Diss, roughly fifty minutes cross-country via Attleborough. Delivery is priced by distance and shown as its own line in your quote, so you can see exactly what the kit costs and what the travel costs.
Can you supply sound for an event at Dereham Memorial Hall?
Yes. We supply systems sized for hall events — dances, concerts, fairs, presentations and meetings — delivered and tested before doors. Tell us what is on the programme and how many people are expected, and we will set up a system that stays clear in a hard-surfaced room.
Do you do garden and outdoor wedding ceremonies near Dereham?
Yes. For an outdoor ceremony we use battery-powered speakers and wireless microphones, so there are no cables across the lawn and no need for mains. For the evening we move to a full PA and lighting, often in a barn or marquee nearby.
Can you help with a church concert or the Christmas Tree Festival?
Yes. Large churches need several smaller speakers spread down the nave rather than one loud speaker at the front, plus radio mics for readers and presenters. We also supply portable hearing loops for visitors who use hearing aids.
Can a volunteer run the equipment on the night?
Yes — that is how most community events in and around Dereham work. We set the system up, label the controls and walk your volunteer through it. If you would rather not worry about it, an engineer can stay for the event.
How much notice do you need for a Dereham booking?
For a summer Saturday or a December party night, four to six months is sensible. Midweek and off-peak events are often available at short notice, so it is always worth asking even if your date is only a week or two away.
